My 89 Cannondale Criterium returned to the road after two years of hanging in the garage while I formulated the plan and collected components. Pretty much everything needed repair or replacement, including the paint job. Only original parts are the brake calipers, because black single-pivots just look right on this era. Microshift R-10 with 5600 DRs, my favorite Salsa Cowchipper handlebars, Mavic CXP-22s, and the icing on the cake; Specialized Turbo 320 tpi cotton clinchers in 26mm.

Bar tape arrived and is on the bike. I still need to route the rear light cable along the inner fender edge (using a tough glue) but for now I have it running along the rear rack.

After a full day of paying work, I'm spending a 90+ degree afternoon working on a mid-90s Trek 820.


The bike overall is in remarkably good shape... but (and here's the big but) the wheels looked like they had endured appalling abuse, with dings, divots, splays, rounded-off nipples from prior attempts at repair, and horrifying corrosion.


I did what I could, but they're both red-tagged and put aside for eventual dismantling and salvage.

Also have another batch of shifters degunking in the ultrasonic. Some are carryovers from yesterday's session that got somewhat clean-er, but nowhere near clean enough for reuse. And some brifters that started out impersonating regular levers (e.g. no side-to-side at all), but are now beginning to reveal their inner clickitude.

I just can't find a white Fizik Kurve Chameleon at this time. They are getting really hard to find.

It wasn't worth taking out the phone for but I took apart a 1974 Columbia Sports with a bent frame, fork, and crank this morning. I kept the chrome fenders because those are faster than painted fenders, the rear wheel with an 11/73 AW hub, the handlebar and stem for a future welding project, the generator and seat just because, plus the brakes and levers which are Weinmann 810s. I may cut up the frame for the main tubes or save it for the scrappers.

A former neighbor gave it to me after waiting 10 years for his son, who bent it, to fix it.

This one was in really rough shape when I picked it up a month ago. It needed a complete overhaul and then some. Lots of elbow grease, nail polish and turtle wax polish. I wanted to keep everything I could but had to replace the stem/bars, rear mech, freewheel, peddles, chain and tires. Rear rack is also new to the bike. Totally not worth all the effort and $ but for the fact that I had this exact same model way back in 1985. First year for the Rockhopper.

Still nothing bicycle related. My PT guy still says 'Nope' to riding. So dealt with a wonky sidecar fog light. Long story short, after an hour of futzing around and seeming to have the issue fixed until I snugged up the last zip tie, and ending up back where I started, I decided it's time to fab up a new wiring harness.

I bet motorcycles that aren't ridden year round in the upper Midwest do not have corrosion problems.

Fog light issue fixed on the sidecar AND I'm going to PO the PT guy because I did take the Everton for a short spin on my street. Zero ankle pain though my knee complained about the slight incline. Just that short bit has me ready to lower the seat just a bit and find a dumpster for the handlebar.

Peugeot hybrid/MTB bikes seem to be super heavy compared to other marquees. The SLimestone I picked up a few years ago for the clunker challenge was super heavy for a hybrid.

After yesterday's unimpressive ride on the orange Everton, I forced myself up the garage attic stairs this morning to root through my stash and came back down with a black swept back bar and a shorter stem.

What a difference. The 'Old Fart Lefsa Special' felt like a different, and better, bike from yesterday. Which is weird because I pulled those bars off of a different bike because I didn't like how the bike rode with them. I guess I found the right combo. I'm still not 100% sold on the old white Troxel saddle, but it is kind of butt friendly. So far. We'll see what my heinie feels like once I get the okay to go some distance.
Until I can talk Mrs.bikamper into cutting me some vinyl graphics, I'm calling this one done.

I have a handful and they are all pretty heavy, except the "Canyon Express" which I believe was the top of the line. Need to dbl check but I think that one is Ishiwata tubing and much better components.

I spent a frustrating day working on Mrs. Idaho’s $40 Craigslist Huffy special. She does NOT share my passion for bicycles. A modern made in China bike with its version of derailleurs are…not fun to adjust. I’m by no means an expert derailleur adjuster. But I can usually figure them out. Eventually. But the RD fought me for hours. Got it close enough for campground riding.

At one point I drug out of the junk pile behind the shop Mrs. Idaho’s ‘Ol Huffy. Early 90’s. I was going to rob the Shimano derailleurs. Then an idea spawned by many here like AdventureManCO got me wondering if I could bring it back to life. I sprayed copious amounts of penetrating oil on the chain and worked the frozen links with pliers until I could pedal the bike. Hmmph. I decided not to canibalize but rehab Mrs. Idaho’s ride from when she was a teen. The brakes articulate and the RD shifts. Street tires? Repaint? Dunno. Yet.

After finding out that A, I can kick start the Ural, and B, I can ride and shift it without my ankle swearing at me, I started to reassemble the Mercier 100 I got a week or so ago.

Right now, just trying to find out what's there, what's not, what's good, and what's shot. So far, BB spindle is number one on the shot list, followed closely by non-rebuildable Union pedals. Cables and housing are on the what's not there list.

Something a bit more modern today than the 70's Holdsworth I was working on two days ago. This Colnago CT1 came in a large purchase I made a couple of weeks ago. Went to build it today since it's raining yet again but ran into a couple of minor issues. Need a few small items that I can't get on a Sunday so just mocked it up for now. This is getting built with mostly DA 7700 parts out of my stash but a 7800 crankset. Right now using the DA 7700/Velocity wheels that I took off the Moser Leader AX. This bike has old school clearance too as the 700 x 23's are about the best that are going to fit on this.

Should finish easily once I get the few parts I need. Funny things is this Ti/CF frameset still isn't building up that light. Looks like it will be coming in at around 18.5 lbs when done. I've got a couple steel beauties lighter than that. Some snaps from when I stopped messing with it.

Had this bike for so long with many different buildups but… for it to make the keeper status, it needs to become the fixed/SS I need for around here.

Nice mix of vintage and modern parts. Plus it just so happens to match my Jeep 95 YJ colour.
